Out with the old, in with the new
MAXXI (http://www.fondazionemaxxi.it/en/), the recently-opened contemporary art gallery designed by Zaha Hadid, is a refreshing antidote to the antique. I absolutely love Rome, but after a while, one fresco blurs into another, and you wonder whether religious artists really experienced an ephiphany or if they were painting by numbers (doodle art for the Popes?). Anyhow, we needed a break from the old, so a short cab ride out to Flaminio led us to a really special gallery. It's only just opened and the queues manageable.
It’s quite amazing considering its setting in suburbia, but it’s also a lovely space inside. When we went, there was a mixed bag of exhibits. The standout was Gino De Dominicis. I’ve never heard of him before, but his work was playful and amusing. Check out the dead rollerskater and his dog.....pinned down by a gold spike.
